Tasting Notes

Bright, enticing nose of sweet red cherries with a leafy lift and delicate floral overtones. The elegant palate develops the cherry motif right through the fruity finish. Really lovely wine boasting the perfect balance of ripe fruit and tannin grip with a refreshing herbaceous background character.

By her own admission, Bay of Fires' winemaker Penny Jones' passion for wine stems from a less than auspicious beginning: 'It began when working for a French chef in a basement restaurant in Hobart, having previously dropped out of Hospitality Management school. I would peel onions, mop floors and clean bathrooms by day, and then wait tables at night. But during services, we would all sit down for a simple French feed and a glass of wine; and that was the catalyst.'

Joining Bay of Fires in 2013 initially as its winemaker for the Eddystone Point range, Jones says that the ethos of the winery (which also picked up a Gold at the 2013 DAWA for its 2012 Pinot Noir) is straightforward: 'The Bay of Fires philosophy is very simple: to make classically structured wines, combining fruit intensity with refinement, complexity and persistence of flavour. We recognise that each of Tasmania's sub-regions are unique and produce fruit with distinctly different characters. We source fruit from all across Tasmania to create layered, fruit-driven and elegant wines, ready to drink upon release yet with the ability to age gracefully.'

A rough, wild and windy growing season in 2014 meant that only 2,400 cases of this fabulous Pinot were produced, yet Jones believes that the vintage is still a fine one: 'Poor conditions during flowering meant than yields across the state were down by around 30%, but the flavours are amazingly concentrated, the colours deep, and this may go on to rival the exceptional 2012 vintage.'
