PIRIE NV SPARKLING

PIRIE NV SPARKLING

Per bottle: $33.00

Region: Tamar Valley
Vineyard: Pirie

This wine is made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes grown at White Hills vineyard in Tasmania's Tamar Valley. White Hills sits on a free-standing hill at the head of the Tamar Valley, with almost 100 metres difference in altitude between the lowest and highest blocks. The site provides commanding views of the mountainous terrain of the Great Western Tiers. Being around 55km from the coast it has a continental climate with warm summer days and some icy winter mornings. The higher blocks produce sparkling fruit with amazing purity and acid lines. Free run juice and light pressings (max 0.2 bar) are oxidatively handled. With blending of multiple parcels from the upper Tamar Valley with some aged, reserve wines. 20% of the blend was fermented and matured in puncheons (500 Litre) French barrels for between 2 and 6 months. Tirage and secondary ferment in bottle (mthode traditionelle) was followed by a minimum of 18 months on lees before disgorging.

Tasting Notes

This sparkling wine is a pale straw/gold colour with a fine and persistent bead. Bready and biscuity autolysis notes from lees ageing are balanced by crisp apples and citrus lift. Vibrant lemony acidity adds drive to a full and rich mid-palate, vigorous mousse and a slaty, mineral persisting finish. Drinking well now it will continue to improve over the next 4 years.
